Of course, you can start with a free account on WordPress or Blogger, but it’s never really yours, and you don’t have access to all the features you will need. And if you’re running a writing service, you will need to spend money on a reliable payment platform.

  1. You Need to Know Exactly What You’re Doing

Not exactly. While it pays not to be totally clueless, you don’t have to know everything when it comes to entrepreneurship, or even writing. Your willingness to discover and learn new skills is arguably more important than how much you know when you are first starting out. In fact, there will be plenty of tools, apps, and platforms which haven’t been invented yet, but which you will need to master five years from now. Stay passionate and curious, and you will have nothing to worry about.

  1. Writing for the Web Is Easy

Even if you are a brilliant writer, or an established author who has published several books, you will find writing for the web a challenge, because you will be required to become a jack of all trades. Aside from writing, you will have to know your way around marketing, promotions, social media, web design, image editing, as well as some business basics. Then there is the fact that you will have to churn out quality content week after week, which doesn’t always come easy.

  1. You Can Write about Anything

You are your own boss, and that means you can do whatever you like, but even so, you still need to keep your business afloat, and you can only do that if you start writing for an audience. Find a niche which is profitable/popular and write content for a targeted audience. If you are keen on writing on a topic which has nothing to do with your writing business or blog, you can always start a personal blog. Running an online business, even if it involves writing, is all about what the audience wants and needs.

  1. You Will Have a Ton of Free Time

Since you don’t have a boss to bark orders at you, taking a day off, or leaving work after lunch will seem like a tempting idea. No problem, but it also means you are not going to make any money that day. Working part-time and bringing in full-time cash is not exactly possible if you are just starting out. You will need to work as hard as you can to establish your blog/brand/service, which means working overtime almost every day.

Sure, it can be free, but you are not going to make a ton of conversions from it. Good advertising costs money, and granted, you won’t have a huge budget for it in the beginning, which means you will have to work harder and put in more hours managing your social media presence. You will save a few bucks, but you will spend most of your free time working, so it’s not exactly free. As your business grows, even if you decide not to finance a pricey marketing campaign, you will still have to hire someone to run all of your social media profiles, while you focus on growing your business.

  1. You Need to Do Absolutely Everything Yourself

It’s either that, or finding a partner, which also means splitting your profit. Not true. These days, you can hire a freelancer part-time to take care of different stages of your projects or business. For example, you don’t need to hire a graphic designer full-time if you want your blog to feature amazing infographics. Simply hire a freelance designer to do it. If you don’t have the time to write a blog post for next week, again, hire a freelance writer. Over time, you will develop a network of people you can rely on whenever you need something done.

  1. You Have to Work Your Way Up in Terms of Pay

Online businesses do not necessarily follow the same trajectory. There are plenty of writers which have been able to go from writing for content mills, and being paid a few bucks per article, to earning 20 times more after just one guest post for the right blog. It all depends on how good you are at selling yourself and networking people and, of course, your skills. As you can see, it’s quite different that your regular job.

  1. You Should Write as Much as You Can about Your Business

As pointed out in one of the previous paragraphs, it is all about what the users want, solving their problems, and meeting their needs by producing valuable and informative content. They won’t care much about posts where you go on about your business, unless it is something they can benefit from. Of course, you can publish a post about your business every now and then, just to remind your readers that it offers a solution to their problems.

  1. You Need to Start at the Right Moment

Another common myth when it comes to online businesses. The best time to start your business is now. You can spend months, or even years waiting for that elusive “right” moment, or you can roll up your sleeves and start working. Some of the best business ideas have been realized at the most inopportune moments. There is always going to be something, some circumstance which makes things less than ideal, but that shouldn’t stop you from doing what you want to do.

    People always make a mistake of thinking blogging is easy,post a few lines about your cat and people will start coming to your site.Maybe that was the case years ago but not today, there are so many pieces that have to fit before you can start getting traffic to your site and can make money blogging.
    Took me 2 posts to make my first sale (lucky break) after that it took me about 7 months.
    My site now has exactly 100 posts, all top quality, average 750 low competition keywords but I still have to work hard at getting traffic.
    It`s hard to say what work and what dont, but the pieces have to fit and this takes time,trial and error and alot of patience.
