That you don’t have enough time on your hands does not mean that you can’t get a piece of the agriculture pie. You can start your own agriculture business as a side hustle while you focus on your main activity. With time, agriculture could become your main activity, who knows.
It’s tough to talk of agriculture as a side hustle because most of the business activities will need your full time and attention. However, there are some businesses in the agro-sector you can engage in on the side and still make your money.
You may not make a full-time income at first but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, we are talking about a side hustle, no? The idea is to add more profitable sources of income to your portfolio and go on to build a wealth empire from there.
Agriculture is a booming sector in Africa, especially Nigeria. Getting involved becomes a question of ‘when’, not ‘if’.
In this post, I want to show you 6 businesses in the agriculture sector you can start as a side hustle to generate more passive income for yourself. Whether you have a job or you have another business does not matter. These business ideas will give you time to still do what you do.
In writing this post, I assume that you would rather handle the business yourself. If you think of outsourcing your agriculture business to a reliable consultant or a trusted family/friend, then any agriculture business can run as your side hustle. You only need to provide the funds and go do something else while someone else works for you.
With the assumption that this is not the case, and that you’d rather do it yourself, you can start any of these 6 agriculture businesses as a side hustle.
If you value your time, snails value their free time even more. They eat at night, make no noise and spend most of their time thinking about their life :). Seriously, As far as agriculture side hustles go, snail farming is one of the simplest you can think of.
The idea is that you can go about your business in the day, feed your snails in the evening, clean up their pen and still have enough time for some evening stroll or research or whatnot.
If you are thinking of starting the biggest snail farm in your state then we are no longer talking about a side hustle, are we?
Start an agriculture based blog
Many people want to venture into agriculture but they lack the funds to get something going, so they take a job to save up for their grand scheme. Does this describe you?
So you love agriculture and you have good knowledge of how things work in farming and such, but your job does not give you enough time and you need your paycheck to keep body and soul together eh? If you have good writing skills, you can start an agriculture based blog and hit 3 major birds with one stone.
- You keep your interest for your agriculture business alive and even increase your knowledge because, as a blogger, you will be doing lots of research and writing.
- You will widen your network because blogging exposes you to meeting different people whom you would not have met otherwise.
- You will establish yourself as an authority in the field so that your path to consulting is already paved even when you still work your job.
An agriculture based blog has many promising prospects which may not be so obvious at first, but would start to pay off in the long run. This is mostly because blogs take a while to gain traction but with commitment and hard work, it is one of the most rewarding decisions you could make.
So how do you work and blog at the same time? You will need to create a suitable time for you to research and write. I wake up very early to write; I am better composed to think in the morning. You will need to find your own time, away from work, which you can devote to your blog.
It does not take much to start a blog but it takes quite a lot to run one. I could teach you how to start your own blog in no time at all. We could even start now if you are interested. Don’t worry, I’m doing it free of charge. Just click here and let’s go get some learning done.
Start a small consulting business
If you are an agro-expert, you can start a consulting business and still do whatever else you got going. You can advise aspiring or existing farmers on how to better manage their farming business.
Don’t let the term ‘consulting’ fool you into thinking of sitting long hours in an office with little time to do anything else.
The only time you spend in consulting business is the time you spend with your clients. If you advise a client for 30 minutes in a day, you have about 17 more hours to do any other business you have for the day. You can even consult for people over the phone, I do it all the time.
When your client base increases to the point where your time is choked, you can consult full-time and make as much money as you want.
Because you are doing this as a side hustle, you will need a strategy to tell people about your vast knowledge and how you can help them without spending so much time away from your main hustle.
Start with publishing guest posts on popular agriculture/business blogs, websites and forums. Participate in online discussions, make regular posts on twitter which shows you know what you are talking, you get the idea.
Buy and sell agro commodity
You can buy agro commodity from one part of the country and sell in the other. Don’t worry, you can still do this as a side hustle; don’t let the thought of inter-state trade freak you out.
What you do is you figure out what to buy, where to buy it from and where to sell it. Let me give you an example.
Palm oil is cheaper and more available in south-eastern Nigeria than in the north, right? Good. So if you live in such area where you can easily and cheaply source palm oil, you already have a supply market. Now you make one trip to northern Nigeria where your main aim would be to find a buyer whom you can supply your palm oil to.
Because you won’t be there all the time, you will need a buyer who is credible and reliable. You waybill your products and they wire your money. Spend one day in the market and you would be surprised at the number of people who conduct their business this way.
Yes, we are still talking about side hustle in agriculture. You can start cattle farming as a side hustle. Simply locate a big cattle farmer, the ones who conduct their business with trust and reliability.
How this works is you buy a calf or a grown cow, depending on your preference, and you keep it with the big cattle farmer you discussed with, who will feed and grow the cow.
At the end of the day, when you make a sale, you share revenue with the ranch based on a prearranged sharing formula.
Lease out farming equipment
This will need a lot of capital but is worth looking at if you can put that amount of cash together. It basically entails buying different farm equipment so that farmers can lease them to make their work easier.
Not every farmer can afford to buy their own tractor or mower. More often, they prefer to pay for the machines. So you make your money while doing whatever else that catches your eye.
You can also lease out farming real estate such that farmers can farm on your land and pay you for it.
As I said, depending on the extent you can allow another person run your business, you can start any agriculture business on the side while still doing what you do. People do it all the time.
If you would prefer to do it yourself, though, you’ve got 6 ideas in this post to start with. If you are determined, nothing can stand in your way of making this money.
