In this post, I will share with you 21 business ideas for women, stay-at-home moms and work-at-home moms. You can pass these ideas to anyone you know and you can get to work immediately on any of them to create your own financial empire.
The entire country was thrown into tumultuous laughter a few months ago when President Buhari said his wife belonged in his kitchen. While this was particularly funny and generated quite a controversy, the message was clear – women want their own share of the economic pie.
The days when women cooked long hours in the kitchen and kept the home while men made all the money are long gone. Women still cook and yes, they still take care of their home but I don’t see many women answering ‘housewife’ recently. No woman wants to sit at home in this economic whirlwind. Everybody wants to make money – as they rightly should.
This post will cover 21 business ideas women can profitably engage in while handling the many other responsibilities they face. These are just mentions to get your idea wheels spinning. Wherever possible, I will include links and references where you can learn further.
21 business ideas for women
1. Fmcg distribution
FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) distribution is among the best business ideas for women – and it is very lucrative too. New FMCG manufacturing companies emerge every day. As a woman, you can connect with any of them and register as a distributor.
One advantage of this is, it gives you steady income. Because FMCG (like soap, tissue, detergents, snacks, noodles, etc) sell very fast, the business is consistent and steady. I know of a woman who started with distributing chin-chin and other snacks. Today she controls her own large distribution outfit. It could be stressful to start at first but think of the money you will be making in the near future.
2. Multi-Level Marketing (MLM)
Multi-level Marketing is actually a legal, lucrative means of steady, passive income – no, they are not Ponzi schemes. It’s the way people go about MLM that leaves a bad taste in the mouth but if you handle it right way, network marketing is lucrative.
I was introduced to MLM by a woman. While I did not think the business model was for me, the woman made insane amounts of money because she got lots of referrals. There are many women who make good money through network marketing, and there are some good MLM companies out there to join. A quick research around you will tell you which ones are doing well.
If you love cooking, catering is good business because of the simple fact that good food is always good business. The good thing with catering business is you can start with any amount of money – small, medium or big scale. Plus you can choose to start either outdoor catering services, indoor or both. When you look around you, I guarantee you must know at least one woman who was able to turn her fortunes around through food/catering business. I interviewed Promise Oghor a while ago and he gave a first-hand account how anyone can start a profitable catering business.
4. School runs
School runs business is another potentially profitable business idea for women. The reason is some parents might not have the time to pick their kids from school. I see people contract keke (tricycle) operator to handle school runs for them. So if you are going to pick your own kids from school anyway – and you have time on your hands – you can arrange with other parents in your neighborhood and start your school runs business.
You can start with your vehicle or hire a bus driver (use your imagination). You can also buy a school bus and lease it out to a new school around you. This is also a good source of residual income because the school will take care of the vehicle. You only need to wait while they remit agreed-upon returns to your account.
5. Fashion design
Fashion design does not have to be much tasking to start. Most women would opt to go for training and make clothes by themselves. While this is stressful and also rewarding, there is another way.
There are cloth makers to whom you can outsource the tailoring. They will make the clothes using whichever design you choose. They will even let you choose your own label and attach the labels to the clothes. Your part will be to market the clothes in boutiques and corporate offices around you.
This is practically private labeling which we will discuss later in this post.
Blogging is fun and profitable. It takes a while to gain traction but once you establish your blog with consistent traffic, there are countless ways you can make money. You can start a blog on any topic you are interested in or passionate about, or you can choose from any of these 18 blogging topics for beginners.
You hear about the likes of Linda Ikeji and BellaNaija, but there are other bloggers you may not have heard about (they are not celebrity/gossip bloggers) and they make good consistent income right from the comfort of their homes. Hadassah, for example, runs a natural hair care blog called nappilynigeriangirl.com. These are people like you who make money expressing themselves on the internet and teaching others what they know.
I hold special blog training sessions for serious persons who are passionate about blogging but have no idea how to start. You will learn everything you need to create a money-making blog of your own within the shortest duration of time. To learn more about this, click here to contact me.
7. Online retail business
The internet has become a booming marketplace and online retail has become very profitable over the past few years. Why stick to conventional brick-and-mortar business when you can sell online, reach more people and make more profits?
You don’t need to have your website to start your own online retail business. For a start, you can list your products on big online retail stores like Konga or Kaymu. They already have the traffic, payment processing and inventory management. All you do is deliver the products on demand and settle down to count your cash.
8. Day care
If you are going to be taking care of your own kids anyway, and you have the space and startup cash, why not make it a business? You get to spend so much time with your kids, and other kids, plus you make cool cash in the process. Granted, not everybody has the grace to handle 17 crying babies at the same time so if this not you, best move on the next item. However, if you love hanging with kids, day care is a cool business for you.
Freelancing is the easiest business for beginners to start on the internet. You don’t need anything much, only your skills and your internet enabled computer. You can get started right now and head out to start making $10-$20 an hour as an entry level freelancer. To make money as a freelancer, you need to know skills like writing, copywriting, graphics design, web design, etc.
Common sites you can get freelancing jobs include: freelancing.com, upwork.com, Fiverr.com etc. You choose your own working hours and accept only jobs you can deliver, making cool cash all the while.
Dropshipping is another business you can start and run from your home. This is how it works: you set up an online platform where you advertise products. These products are sold by a third-party. When someone places an order for any of the products, you purchase the item from a third-party and have it shipped directly to the customer.
This is different from standard online retail in the sense that you, as the merchant, don’t see the product or handle its inventory. Instead you have it shipped directly to the buyer and collect your profit.
11. Rental business
Rental business involves leasing out plastic tables and chairs for people organizing ceremonies for an agreed fee. Leasing business is one business that generates passive income. It is passive income because the business continues to generate income for the business owner with no other capital input after the initial capital.
Many ceremonies like traditional weddings, white weddings, birthday parties, child dedication and many others are organised every week, and the organizers always have need to rent chairs and tables for the event, thus there is and will always be a high demand for the table and chair rentals. For the stay at home mom, this is a perfect business opportunity.
This is where your superior knowledge comes into play. If you have specialized skills, you can start your own consulting business and charge a fee for your services. An example is tutoring young entrepreneurs and offering advice on various businesses. I know many business consultants that work part-time and make a lot of extra cash mentoring young entrepreneurs.
Agriculture is the new oil right now. I don’t need to say much on the benefits of agriculture as a business. I made a post listing 50 agriculture business ideas you can start right away and make money. The list includes businesses like bean flour production, snail farming, cassava processing, etc. Pick anyone you fancy from the list and let’s talk about turning it into a lucrative business for you.
14. Private labeling
As I explained when I talked about fashion design, you can have any product you want made in your own brand name, using the specifications you provide, all this without spending a dime on factory site or machinery. This business model is called private labeling. When people go to China, produce things and come to market here in Nigeria, they are essentially private labeling.
Dilim Okeke is a wife, mother and an entrepreneur. She makes her money through private labeling and she recently launched a new book, Business Big Time, where she explains exactly how to start your own private labeling business. You can read more about her success story in this interview.
15. Event Planning
If you are gifted with organizing events, you could make a fortune as an event planner. You don’t need a special office to be an event planner. All that is required is a skill to organize and plan large parties, weddings, and other occasions.
Many people would not want to bear the burden of coordinating their event, instead they would want to employ the services of an event planner and this is where you come in.
16. Affiliate marketing
After freelancing, affiliate marketing is the next easiest and best way to make money online. An affiliate marketer is an online salesperson who promotes products in exchange for a commission.
For example, if you sign up as an affiliate for Konga.com, Konga will give you a unique affiliate link. Whenever someone buys anything on Konga through your link, Konga pays you a commission. It works like magic. Most internet marketers make money by promoting other people’s products.
17. Information marketing
When you sell information online, it is called information marketing. You can make money online by creating and selling eBooks or video tutorials. Information is the costliest commodity in the world today.
Say you know how to make beautiful beads, you can create an information product showing interested people how to make beads for sale. Assuming you sell your video/e-book at #1,000 and 100 people choose to buy, you make 1,000 x 100 = #100, 000. All you did was just prepare the e-book/video and market it. Cool, right?
18. Online tutoring
Learning has gone digital. People make money these days by selling online tutorial courses on sites like Udemy.com or on their personal websites/blogs.
19. Vlogging (video blogging)
Enough people have become overnight celebrities by making short videos and posting them on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or other sites. You can start your own YouTube channel and also post your videos on Facebook. To make this work, you need a concept that will capture the hearts of people. It could be anything from informational, educational, hilarious, bizarre or reviews. I leave it to your imagination.
20. social media consulting/management
If you are one of those women who have a large social media follower base, you are missing out on a lot of money without knowing it. Not only can you consult for companies and show them how to establish a social media presence for their brand, you can also manage social media accounts for people who can afford it. You work in your own house and get paid doing what you love. You were spending much time on social media anyway. Make it a business.
If you have a relative or friend living abroad you could contact them to send goods to you. Shoes are just one item in this category. You could sell designer cloths, jewelries, computer hardware, bags, cosmetics, the list of items is simply endless.
These business ideas for women are not the only ones you can make money from. I have listed 21 to get your ideas spinning. In the end, what matters is your ability to do something and make some money for yourself.
Share this post with every woman you know to help them get ideas for their business. Our lines are open if you need help starting any of the listed businesses – or any business for that matter.
